Have you discovered the power of podcasts yet?

I feel like I've just scratched the surface. The interwebs have made it easier than ever to subscribe to podcasts you like and better still,  sync the content across your platforms. This works especially well for people who find it easier to listen to words rather than read them.  Some are simply podcast editions of radio shows. Others are 'podcast only' productions. Several of the podcasts I like are panel shows or shows that feature interviews. It's the type of content that one is more likely to find on radio or television than in books.

Take a look at these 7 reasons why you should start listening to podcasts now

dopamine podcast

Judith, Liz, Gloria and Linda do such a great job with this forum. They remind me of my friends and represent such a great sisterhood that is lacking. My favorite episodes are 'are women sabotaging their careers' and 'building a positive work culture. Looking forward to season 2

girls like me ug

Cathy and Solaire are great hosts and navigate very necessary conversations with such ease. It goes without saying that I'm happy to see Ugandan girls taking centre stage on real topics such as the ones mentioned in the episodes 'the myth of sisterhood' and 'the perils of a christian in the dusty city'

super soul conversations

Oprah’s personal selection of her interviews with thought-leaders, best-selling authors, spiritual luminaries, as well as health and wellness experts is refreshing. ‘Dr. Maya Angelou, Part 1: 9 Words That Changed Her Life’ and ‘Shonda Rhimes: Change Your Life By Saying “Yes” (And "No" Too)’ are my favorite episodes

marriage & martinis

Danielle and Adam are so real and funny and relatable. Its interesting to see that most marriages are more alike than we think. They talk about things most podcasts don’t dare to go, love it!! ‘The Fighting Episode’ is my favorite because it’s real, raw and relatable.

women & money

Suzie's been a long time advocate for women and financial freedom. She offers great insights and actionable advice on investing, saving and life. If you want to try it, I'd recommend starting with the 'Ask Suzie anything' episode.

ratchet & respectable

Demetria's work is art. She's my big sister in my head lol. Not only on her IG page, but also on her podcast. Her approach to musings on pop culture shenanigans, dating and relationships is both entertaining and educational. I like 'If I had a TED talk' and 'cultural IQ'

big life kids podcast

I listen to this podcast with my kids. What I love about it is how it teaches children to have a growth mindset and guides them across various life topics such as resilience. They do this through stories about the main characters, Zara and Leo who embark on an interesting journey.

passing through

Nneka Julia shares revelations and wisdom collected through travel, conversation, and self-education. Her voice, expertly timed sound effects and delivery are by far the most riveting thing about the podcast for me. My favorite episode in season 1 is ‘Passing Through Costa Rica’

still processing

Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris are New York Times Times writers who host this culture podcast. Did I mention I’ve met them both? :) My favorite episodes are ‘We watch whiteness’ and ‘We talk Beychella’

hbr women at work

This group of smart women have varying conversations about the workplace, and women’s place in it. I love that it’s honest and open conversation about many things we don’t often feel comfortable opening up about. My favorite episode is ‘Sisterhood is Scarce’

we are netflix

In this podcast, Netflix employees talk about work and life at Netflix. Lyle, the host, interviews some of the most interesting people, from diverse backgrounds. They tackle topics from business development, partnership, localised marketing campaigns, anime, international content at Netflix - to mention but a few.

the dave ramsey show

Dave has a wealth of knowledge in the financial realm which he shares with people all over the world. His content is great, practical and applicable. It's for anyone willing (and ready) to do the work required to achieve financial freedom. There are so many great episodes and stories to draw inspiration from.

note to self

Manoush Zomorodi hosts this show that focuses on the impacts that technology has on everyday life. It is a guide to an accelerating world. ‘Your Metadata is Showing’ is my favorite episode. It was an eye opener for me.

questlove supreme

‘The Roots’ drummer, Author and NYU Professor Quest Love hosts a weekly radio show that digs deep into the stories behind the names you know, and the names you might not. My favorite episode is the interview with Lena Waithe.

rants & randomness

Luvvie Ajayi, also known as the side-eye Sorceress shares some (loving) judgement, (necessary) shade and (of course), rants on all things pop culture and relevant to our lives. My favorite episode is bonus episode 1 #SquadGoals

jesus & jollof

Luvvie Ajayi and Yvonne Orji, two proudly Nigerian women talk about the things they love, their stories, and life in general. Their unedited hearty laughter is everything.‘Sticks in a Bundle: Our Tribe’ is my favorite episode.

the read

Crissle and Kid Fury kill it every time in this weekly podcast where they cover hip-hop and pop culture's most trying stars. Throwing shade and spilling tea with a flippant and humorous attitudes. Madea Loses a Painting’ and ‘Wakanda Forever’ are by far my favorite episodes from these two.

I like this platform that's dedicated to self-care because Maya provides honest, and helpful ways to approach self-care, on so many levels to keep her audience kind to themselves, and take care of themselves mind, body and spirit. 'WTF is preparatory self-care is my new favorite episode.

dead a**

When I listen to Khadeen and Devale, it feels like I'm casually sitting at a table with them, somewhere at a great party with a chill vibe. They're a relatable couple who aren't afraid to talk about love, sex, marriage and everything in between! I like 'Can I live' and 'life ain't the same after 3 whole boys' I highly recommend.

brown ambition

Financial professionals Mandi and Tiffany are awesome on this podcast. They're as real as can be when it comes to financial freedom by juggling life, career and building wealth on your own terms. My fave episode  is 'how Tiffany made her first $1 million as the Budgetnista' It's a truly inspirational story

ted work life with adam grant

We spend a quarter of our lives at work, but too little time thinking about how to make it better. Adam Grant takes you inside unconventional workplaces to explore the ideas we can all use to make work more meaningful and creative. My favorite episode is ‘When Work Takes Over Your Life’
